Hi, I’m Mona Blankshain and welcome to the history behind our company and our products.
In the beginning, 2003; I had elective surgery. I was in a bendable body contraption and needed help to do everything. I couldn’t do anything without help. The pain was excruciating! I was lying in bed not believing how much I had regressed to a child-like dependence on my mother. I was devastated at the thought of anyone having to take care of me in this way.
I am a mom of two beautiful kids blessed with an amazing meeting and incentive planning career helping hundreds and thousands of people; but here I was unable to even brush my teeth. There were so many simple things to help me get better and become more independent but I didn’t want to ask for them. My mother was doing everything for me and my children. I asked her to bring me a pen and notepad and with that I made a list of some things I had in the house that would really make my life easier.
After about a week, she felt comfortable to take the children out for a few hours. As soon as they left, I managed to get up with my list and hobble around the house for my Get Better supplies. After finding my son’s robotic arm toy with a grabber at the end I went thorough the house room by room. Slowly but surely I managed to find everything I wanted to make myself a Get Better Box. Two hours later and just as I crawled into bed, my mom and children returned.
I was set. These simple items really helped the weeks of recovery pass easily. The fan and flashlight were lifesavers! I was so hot on and off, that I needed my own little cooling device to help adjust my temperatures. At times I couldn’t even hold the fan - so that’s when I got my list back out and decided to refine each component. One of the important factors of the fan was the rubber stoppers so when placed down, it would not vibrate itself over. I used the flashlight because I couldn’t get up to turn on the light and even if I could, I didn’t want to wake my mother as she was sleeping in the same room. (What a sweetheart!) Because of the medicine induced zombieness, many nights I was wide awake and couldn’t find my book, notepad or anything. My notes continued with the flashlight - it needed to have a string attached so I could attach a carabineer to something close to my bed. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to even find it in the dark or if it fell.
My container to hold my medications was also really helpful. Sometimes, I was so out of it that I couldn’t remember if I took them or not – so I came up with a system to put them in a container and if that container was full, I would know to take them at the next four hour point. If there were none in the container, I knew I had taken them. It went on and on with everything inside my get better box. And, of course, I came up with new components that would really make my gift set complete to help get better.
My first day back to work, a party was being given for a loved coworker going in for extensive surgery. When asked to attend the party, I froze. The word surgery hung in the air and the pain rushed back to me. I looked at the piles of paper on my desk and the idea occurred. It’s now or never - I grabbed my purse and drove home to print out the list of components that made up my Get Better Box. It took me four hours to go from store to store and buy everything I needed to put together this gifts set. I came back to the office and called her up to my office. She took one look at the get better box and happily accepted the gift. I explained that inside was the simple bare necessities needed to improve recovery time, and bring a smile. I went through each component with her and she just loved it. A few days after her surgery, she called me to thank me and say that the fan and flashlight saved her life. I knew those two items would be critical, so I even included extra batteries for them.
Soon after, my son had his tonsils removed. He asked if I would make him up "one of those boxes". I searched for little toys, games and useful fun items for him and made him a Get Better Box. He was overwhelmed with joy when he came home from surgery. We put on our pj’s and went through his gift set. He began analyzing the items and thought it was such a great gift that everyone would enjoy. Surprisingly, he thought the bell was a must - had to have the bell! We spent the day playing with the gift and he told his sister that "Mommy made me a Kids Get Better Box"!
A few months later my daughter had her adenoids removed and she also wanted a Kids Get Better Box. During her recovery, she began coming up with ideas of what we should put inside... and telling friends.
We began making them for friends and their friends of friends of all ages. Pretty soon thereafter, boutiques and stores began catching our creative wave of recovery must haves.
And, the rest is history. I began coming up with more gift sets filled with useful high quality re-usable components that all of us use in our everyday lives. However, most of us don’t think of some of the things we’ll need for every situation - in the first case, recovering from surgery.
That’s what our gift sets are all about - having the simple bare necessities you need based on the occasion or the situation you are in at the time. And, being able to use those things again and again for other reasons.
We offer the only gift sets in the market place of this top quality that are reusable, non-perishable and made for specific situations. The boxes are convenient to pack, unpack, give and receive ... and what’s best is that each individual product will be used and enjoyed for years to come!
